Chocolate for Sugar-Restricted Diets

Review: Vere Brownies

By John Sedlak

An early step in the review process is visual observation. The Vere Brownie does not look like the traditional square brownie. The pieces we reviewed were made in a rectangular shape of approximate dimensions 5/8” x 5/8” x 1 ¾” Then they were individually bubble-packed and boxed. We examined the box with six walnut brownies or two servings of three pieces each and then the peanut and coconut versions.

This brownie had a smell like a high quality baking chocolate and contained small cubes of walnuts. The texture was smooth and not especially chewy, but had a feel of fiber. A wrap-around coating of chocolate surrounds a smooth center core. The product has a very pleasant cocoa flavor, but is not overly sweet. Because of the small dimensions of an individual piece, one cannot expect the sensation of biting into a large piece of walnut. The brownie is more like a nice tasting chocolate confection, but in small enough pieces to enjoy in two or three bites.

To achieve its great taste, this product uses a special cocoa bean selected both for its flavor and for reduced requirements for sweetener. The main sweetener in the brownie is a low level of fructose. Reportedly, this natural sugar does not tend to spike the blood sugar.

The peanut butter version of the Vere Brownie has a dominant, but not overpowering, peanut taste superimposed on a very nice chocolate background. This brownie has peanut bits inside and on top. The coconut variety was similar in texture to the others, and the fiber feel of the texture matched expectations for a coconut brownie. The coconut flavor is dominant in this brownie.

The Vere Brownies have a splendid chocolate taste along with a significant fiber content and slower metabolizing natural sweeteners. There is a significant fat content which must be accommodated in a dietary plan. As with all foods, the individual should check product “Nutrition Facts” before consumption.

Vere Brownies are available at www.veregoods.com. and at select retail locations in the U.S.
