Review of Fairytale Brownies – Sugar Free Magic Morsels

By John M. Sedlak, Ph.D.

What a nice surprise when opening a sugar free Fairytale Brownie from an individually sealed package.  The first smell was that of a high-quality butter, and the review was off to a great start.  This “magic morsel” has the shape and size of a traditional brownie. The brownie has a rich cocoa flavor blended with the butter – a great combination!

The sugar-free Fairytale Brownie has a dense texture, sufficient chewiness, and a splendid taste to satisfy a demanding brownie lover.  To the reviewer the excellent taste is indicative of quality ingredients, controlled preparation, and careful packaging. Literature supplied with the review sample confirms that the product indeed is made with a high quality Belgian chocolate and sweetened with Maltitol, a sugar alcohol.

Product information mentioned that these brownies can be refrigerated or frozen and then microwaved.  The reviewer took the opportunity to experiment a bit to see if the brownie is affected by such thermal cycling.  After being frozen in the original packaging and then defrosted for an hour, the product retained its excellent taste and texture.  Microwaving can be used to thaw or warm, but only low power for short times is recommended.  Otherwise the brownie might convert into a delicious, but pudding-like, consistency.  Also, microwaving should be done after removal from the sealed original package.

Promotional literature indicates this product is not a low-calorie food.  The Fairytale Brownies are comparable, however, to other sugar free products on total calories and total fats per ounce of serving.  Each consumer must determine for himself or herself the quantity of a food item which can be accommodated in the diet.  The Sugar Free Magic Morsel has a marvelous taste and mouth feel.  The individual packaging is a plus for maintaining quality.
