Butlers Chocolate: Purveyors of Happiness

A lot of things come to mind when I think about Ireland, including green rolling hills, Guinness Beer, singing and step dancing but not chocolate. That has changed. While John and I were in Dublin wandering along Grafton Street we stopped in the Butlers’ Chocolate Store for our chocolate fix and were delighted to learn they offer a factory tour. The next morning we visited their factory where they have a cafe/shop making it the perfect way to start the day especially with a hazelnut truffle and a cup of coffee.

The tour started with a history of chocolate. No matter how many times we see similar videos we always learn something new. This time we were amused to learn the Spanish tried to keep the wonders of chocolate a secret by forbidding the export of cocoa and chocolate. So valued was cocoa that in 1615 Spanish Princess Maria Theresa gave Luis XIV of France a gift of chocolate in an elegant chest upon their engagement.

Walking above the production area, we watched chocolate production from the cocoa bean to the making of creamy fudge and toffees in copper pots to yummy bits being packed in beautiful gift boxes ready to be shipped out to make the world a happier place.

The tour ended in the Butlers Chocolate Experience room, an interactive mini factory where the young and young-at-heart can see up close some of the areas seen on the factory floor, including a machine that spins chocolate bunnies to make them hollow. Guests are encouraged to try their hand at decorating and can take their decorated chocolate home. There was plenty of chocolate tasting.

We were especially impressed to learn that Butlers Chocolate is truly Irish having been started by Ms. Bailey Butler in 1932 in Georgian Dublin but was then purchased by Seamus Sorensen in 1959. The best part is that his children are currently running the company All the workers feel like they are part of the family with some workers the children of previous workers. Must be great to work is such a sweet place. I forgot to ask if they get to eat all the chocolate they want!

After all, they think chocolate can make the world a better place. They say, “… sounds a bit crazy: the idea that chocolate could make the world a nicer place. But hear us out. Because at Butlers, when we look at one of our roasted almond pralines, we don’t just see a chocolate. What we see is a little moment of happiness. And we reckon that if just such a moment could be experienced by a great many people, and on a regular basis, why then the world might become a happier place. You see, since we were founded– in Dublin’s Lad Lane in 1932–we’ve aimed to bring happiness to the world through chocolate.”

Ah… what a concept. Spreading happiness worldwide… one chocolate bite at a time. So easy and so delicious.
