Detroit is a Sure Bet

I never thought of Detroit as a gaming destination. Now I know better. Detroit’s MotorCity Casino is slick! Radiating excitement from every floor, MotorCity is more than gambling. It is entertainment, dining– and chocolate.

John and I were blown away by MotorCity’s Sound Board, one of Detroit's most innovative live-performance theaters. While they feature some of the biggest names in entertainment, the intimate 1,500-seat theater puts everyone close to the performers. With state-of-the-art sound technology, Sound Board is an intense entertainment experience. Sound Board often has big name entertainers but we enjoyed a group that is a local favorite.

After eating, we headed to Amnesia, MotorCity Casino’s trendy lounge high at the top of the hotel with spectacular views of the city. The music continued and we learned a new word: V-J. There were two V-Js. A V-J is one who does not spin records but plays music videos, often ones that they created, hence the word V-J.

The music and the view were great but we were attracted to the desserts that were just as trendy and spectacular.

Amnesia’s dessert table was spread with a wide selection of beautifully presented desserts, many of them chocolate. Decisions. Decisions. John finally suggested, “Just pick one. They all look like a sure bet.” So, recalling my Girl Scout days I picked a S’more. Atop a thick rich brownie was a handmade marshmallow surrounded by hotel-crafted graham crackers accented with a dark chocolate spike and dark chocolate syrup drizzled over the top. The lady next to me murmured, “Almost too pretty to eat.”

John headed for the pastry chef who was dipping vanilla ice cream into lacy dark chocolate cups. “Look, John, the chocolate cups incorporate the MotorCity logo. How cool is that?” Don’t tell but we went back for seconds!

It was our first night in Detroit and already our image of an economically depressed Detroit was being replaced with a destination pulsating with fun and exciting things to see and do.

Over the next few days we marveled at the beautiful architecture in downtown Detroit on a tour with Inside Detroit, explored The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, and visited several museums. I was especially taken with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History with its excellent displays of the slave experience called “And Still We Rise.” The journey begins with life in prehistoric Africa and the evolution of modern African civilizations. It continues with horrors of the Middle Passage and life in the Americas. John, being a car guy, was especially intrigued with the Walter P. Chrysler museum.

John and I agreed that the desserts at MotorCity Casino are a sure bet to satisfy the chocolate craving and Detroit is a sure bet for people looking for a variety of fun things to see and do.
