Chocolate and Tea: Twice as Healthy Together

Saxon Chocolates, the Toronto-based maker of luxury Belgian chocolates, has created a  collection of matcha tea-infused chocolate products in partnership with natural beauty products retailer Origins.

Matcha is a Japanese green tea believed to help increase mental clarity and energy. It contains high amounts of L-theanines, natural amino acids, as well as the tea caffeine theophylline and provides ten times more antioxidants per serving than regular green tea.

Chocolates in the Saxon line featuring matcha include

  • Cherry Matcha Green Tea Bark made with 70% dark Belgian chocolate, Matcha tea and all-natural dried cherries.

  • Matcha Green Tea Enrobed Cherries made with tart cherries (dried) enrobed in Matcha tea and 70% dark Belgian chocolate.

Recent studies suggest that the high concentrations of cocoa found in dark chocolate are beneficial in promoting a healthy heart and body. The chocolate contains the antioxidants and flavonoids.  Antioxidants protect the body from aging caused by free radicals, which can cause damage that leads to heart disease. Flavonoids help lower blood pressure through the production of nitric oxide and balance certain hormones. Research has shown that consuming fifty grams of dark chocolate per day can add iron, potassium, and calcium to the diet.

Tart cherries are a rich source of antioxidants.  They have among the highest levels of disease-fighting antioxidants of all fruits. The flavonoids in tart cherries have been shown to lower blood lipids, reducing the risk of heart disease.  For more information visit

Saxon Chocolates’ products for Origins will be available in 89 of the 135 Origins stores nationwide.
